"INALIENABLE RIGHTS"

From the August 1938 issue of The Christian Science Journal

We are apparently witnessing in the world today a mighty conflict between the forces which make for human enslavement and those which ensure the freedom of mankind. On the one hand, law is being set aside; on the other, law is being championed. On the one side, ethical standards, long approved, are being questioned and rudely disregarded; on the other, moral and spiritual values are being given their rightful place as necessary to the progress of the human race—yes, verily, as essential to its very existence. Unquestionably, the battle is being waged today between the battalions of spiritual darkness and the cohorts of spiritual light.

The Christian Scientist is always on the side of law and order, always lending his aid to whatever promotes the moral growth of mankind, always solicitous of the spiritual well-being of his fellow men. Indeed, he places the spiritual progress of mankind first, knowing that as thought is spiritualized, being brought under the law of God through spiritual understanding, human liberation takes place morally—and physically too. Nothing can possibly displace this objective in the consciousness of the sincere Christian Scientist.

That men are entitled to political, moral, and spiritual freedom, surely no one will deny, although some may doubt the possibility. The signs of the times are favorable to this hopeful view, for never before has the light of spiritual truth shone so brightly as today, because of the teaching of Christian Science. Moral darkness may seem to be intense in many quarters, and mortals may appear to be in sore distress because of it; but spiritual light now shines with great brilliancy; and sooner or later it is bound to dispel the darkness and destroy the distress, leaving in their place a settled spiritual calm.
