"WELLS OF SALVATION"

From the August 1938 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The prophet Isaiah, in joyful thanksgiving, sang, "Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation." He then left this promised blessing to those who likewise put their trust in God: "Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation." Truly this inspired prophet had learned through obedience and spiritual understanding how to draw deeply from the wells of living waters, and to behold God as his Saviour.

The master Christian, Christ Jesus, was forever drawing water from the "wells of salvation." Because his life was one of spiritually mental work, he steadfastly contemplated the allness of God. Therefore he never lacked or lost an opportunity to do good. What a debt of gratitude we owe our great Wayshower, whose teachings are available through precept and proof!

It is recorded in the fourth chapter of John that Jesus and his disciples in journeying to Galilee must needs pass through Samaria; and it is stated that Jesus became wearied and sat down to rest at Jacob's well while the disciples went into the city to buy food. One cannot think of this man, who, by conforming to the laws of God was able to still the turbulent sea, cast out demons, and restore a deceased son to his mother, succumbing to weariness. He knew that "the highest and sweetest rest, even from a human standpoint, is in holy work" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, pp. 519, 520) In this narrative we learn that a woman of Samaria came to draw water. The hatred between the Jews and Samaritans was very bitter. However, Jesus, in his great desire to help those with whom he came in contact, did not let traditional hatred stand in the way, but asked the woman for a drink. We can well see how he found refreshment in giving to her his marvelous message of salvation.
