About the end of the first week in January, 1929, while waiting for a streetcar, I slipped and fell, my legs going under the running board of a taxi which was standing beside me. When I reached my apartment I found that the front part of my right leg had been scratched in the fall. I declared the truth and did not think any more about it.
Some time later, while I was at work one day, I was seized with pain in this leg so severe that it seemed necessary for me to go home. That evening I went to a friend's home, where I became unconscious. This friend took care of me, and a day and a half later I asked her to telephone to a Christian Science practitioner for me. By this time infection seemed to have made great headway. Everyone around me was opposed—some bitterly opposed—to Christian Science, and insisted on my having medical treatment. I took my stand, and said that I would rely wholly upon Christian Science. However, without my knowing it, my friends called in a doctor. The doctor refused to have anything to do with the case, saying that I should be sent to a hospital. I refused to go, and this increased the antagonism of my friends.
Christian Science treatment was continued, and four days later, when the practitioner came to see me, she told me the following verse had come to her while working for me in the night: "Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth." This seemed to be the turning point. The following day I was able, with difficulty, to get from my bedroom into the next room. To my surprise, when I put my foot to the floor, something in the leg clicked as though a bone had suddenly snapped into place. After this the healing progressed rapidly.
Ten days from the time I became unconscious in my friend's home, I was able, with the aid of another friend, to walk one block and up a flight of stairs to my own apartment. Improvement was steady, and at the end of another two or three weeks I was again able to take up part of my work, which meant a great deal of standing on my feet. I continued to grow in understanding, and in a short time was doing my usual amount of work to the great surprise of my friends. While treatment was being given, I lost all desire for beer, which I was in the habit of taking.
I should like to add that the friend in whose apartment I became unconscious, and who at the time was so bitterly opposed to Christian Science, told me about two years ago how much she was enjoying reading our Christian Science literature, and asked me for a Quarterly.
Words fail to express my deep gratitude for Mrs. Eddy, who has brought to those who are willing to seek it the beautiful revelation of Christian Science, and for unfolding the Bible to us through our textbook, Science and Health. I wish to express my sincere gratitude to God for all my blessings. Divine Love heals all sickness and sin, if only we strive to get a better understanding of the truth.— Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
