THE YOKE AND THE BURDEN

[Original article in German]

From the July 1939 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Scientists are especially grateful that, through the teachings of their Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, the utterances of our Master, Christ Jesus, can be understood in their spiritual meaning. It is spiritual sense which illumines the Word and reveals its true meaning. The earnest student of Christian Science is further aware that a consecrated study of the Gospels brings the teachings of Jesus closer to his consciousness, thus enabling him to use all our Master's words in their direct application to daily life.

When, during his short earthly career, Jesus looked upon the weariness of men, and saw the unbearable burdens which they took upon themselves, or which were laid upon them through erroneous material beliefs, in his compassionate love he said: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

With spiritual perception, and moved by great love for mankind, Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 226), "The lame, the deaf, the dumb, the blind, the sick, the sensual, the sinner, I wished to save from the slavery of their own beliefs and from the educational systems of the Pharaohs, who to-day, as of yore, hold the children of Israel in bondage." Today many can testify to the fact that Christian Science does make all burdens light.
