INSPIRING TRUTHS ABOUT MAN

From the October 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IT is a well-attested fact that the passages concerning man in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, have inspired and richly benefited a multitude of people. What men have longed to hear about themselves— what they are capable of, what is in store for them, what they are in reality—these passages (pages 258:9 to 260:18; 475:5 to 477:18; and 336:9 to 338:32, among others) have told them, scientifically; and both the message and its results have commonly been better than anything they had even hoped for.

Mrs. Eddy spiritually discerned the fact, indicated in the first chapter of Genesis, that man is made in the likeness of God. The revelation of the nature of God to her was complete, and it therefore left no vagueness as to the nature of man. God she recognized to be "incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love" (Science and Health, p. 465); and she saw that man is the expression of this infinite Principle.

The immeasurable implications of these majestic and yet simple concepts unfold naturally to anyone who gives proper heed to them. Infinite divine Principle could not be expressed in limitation of any kind; therefore it is evident that man in his real nature, even the true individuality of every one of us, is not limited at all. Since God is infinite Mind, ignorance is impossible for man as he really is. God being Spirit, matter, with all discord and decay— which are but aspects of what appears to human sense as matter— has no part in man's being or consciousness. And as the expression of infinite and perfect Life, man is by nature incapable of death, disease, or even danger, and cannot know them.
