EVIL CANNOT ELEVATE ITSELF

From the October 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IN a museum in New York there hangs a painting of two whistling swans in graceful flight, flying away from a somewhat dark background toward the sunshine. They appear to be going higher and higher, with apparently nothing to hinder their ascent, no power to hold them back.

Should we not courageously endeavor to leave the dark side of any picture which may seem to have been, or to be at the present moment, a part of our human experience, and should we not patiently strive to see the utter unreality of evil, and thereby rise above the testimony of the material senses? Indeed we should! For clinging to a belief of evil, as though it were something real, holds one back and delays one's spiritual progress.

Students of Christian Science are learning that mortal mind cannot testify to that which is real and divinely good. They are learning also that unless false beliefs are recognized as such, and then are scientifically rejected, they are not destroyed. One should beware of giving one's consent to the mesmeric suggestion that evil possesses power. It is the understanding of spiritual power and obedience to spiritual law which destroy belief in evil as an entity. It is comforting to know that the law of God, divine Principle, is ever operative.
