GUARDING THOUGHT

From the November 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the book of Proverbs are found these helpful admonitions for those who would seek guidance in true thinking and acting: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding," and, "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." From these it is evident that our daily lives must be constantly guarded with the protecting armor of Godlike thoughts.

Here the question will naturally arise, But how are we to meet and overcome the insistent opposite suggestions of error? This question is answered by Christian Science, which is based upon the Scriptures, and which reveals the unalterable truth, the truth which Jesus said would make free. Mary Baker Eddy has written in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 234): "We should become more familiar with good than with evil, and guard against false beliefs as watchfully as we bar our doors against the approach of thieves and murderers."

In order to "become more familiar with good than with evil" we must maintain the holy desire and willingness to be governed by the divine Mind, and lay aside false desires and faults of character, which do not belong to true selfhood, reflecting God. To guard our thoughts we must realize that in our spiritual selfhood we are God's reflection, the expression of His perfection. Through fervent prayer we must seek to avail ourselves of the power of Spirit, for in this way only can we realize how divine Love meets our needs and guides our thought in the solution of our human problems. Spiritual understanding is not to be obtained through false theories or human philosophy, nor through what Paul called the "enticing words of man's wisdom," all of which are based upon a material sense of existence. If we would gain the spiritual illumination which reflects the divine Mind, we must abide by the teachings of the Master, Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, who understood real existence to be wholly spiritual.
