Certain statements by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, come to thought as of particular value in this period of world history. The following is one of them (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 454): "Wait patiently for divine Love to move upon the waters of mortal mind, and form the perfect concept. Patience must 'have her perfect work.' "
We know in Christian Science that the perfect concept is intact, an idea in Mind, although to human sense it seems to be in process of formation. It is well for mankind to be patient, to restrain human will, and to remember that God, Love, works tenderly to bless all. However much men may want peace, their desire for it will accomplish little until they gain some understanding of what constitutes true peace, and more earnestly desire the things of Spirit. A desire for mere material comfort does not constitute an enlightened prayer for peace. Peace can come to us only as we gain a deeper spiritual understanding of God and of His idea, man. Through studying the Bible, together with Mary Baker Eddy's writings, we gain this understanding and express the qualities that make for peace, such as honesty, humility, loving-kindness, and joyous ability to accomplish good.
Unceasing patience is required in attaining a deep spiritual understanding of God and man. Yet this patience which we must exercise is nothing stagnant; it indicates an active, confident maintenance in our consciousness of grateful expectation. As we persist in our study and application of Christian Science, we find that we have the means for solving aright the age-old problems that seem to confront mankind so vigorously today. God's ways are our ways only as we are earnestly, constantly praying, "Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven." Unceasingly the enlightened thinker acknowledges God's will as the only will, governing all reality.
