Testimonies of Healing

I have long wished to express...

From the February 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I have long wished to express through our periodicals my gratitude for Christian Science and its revelation of the truth of being. I had taken a lively interest in the orthodox church of which I was a member, but the time came when it no longer satisfied me. About this time my wife heard of Christian Science, and after attending several services, held in a private home, she got the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. ' We started to study and to put its teachings into practice. We are very grateful for our beloved Leader's clear interpretation of the Bible teaching and promises. We have held to the verse in Psalms (46:1), "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble," and to Mrs. Eddy's statement (Science and Health, p. 494) "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need," and other passages, and we have never used material means for healing.

Our Leader writes (ibid., p. 302) "God is Love. He is therefore the divine, infinite Principle, called Person or God." This statement showed me the true meaning of the word "Principle" and was a great help to me in endeavoring to understand the teachings of Christian Science. Soon after taking up this study I came to the conclusion that there were other healings besides those of bodily ailments to be accomplished, such as the healing of the tobacco habit. I had tried to overcome this through will power and other ways, for the sake of our three boys, but had failed in every attempt until I learned that "Principle is absolute. It admits of no error, but rests upon understanding" (ibid., p. 283). I am indeed grateful to God that the habit was destroyed instantaneously, and that our boys, who are now men, are learning to understand this wonderful Principle, God, through the study of Christian Science.

Later in my experience a malignant growth appeared, which caused much suffering and inconvenience. It seemed to baffle our attempts to heal it; nevertheless use of material means did not appeal to me. The time came when I was utterly incapacitated. A practitioner was called, and a reassuring message came back. This calmed my thought and brought assurance. In two weeks I was completely healed. Sciatica and blood poisoning have also been reduced to nothingness.
