THE HEALING POWER OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

From the February 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christ Jesus was the greatest healer the world has ever known. The Gospels of the New Testament contain the record of his healing work among men, and plainly indicate that it was the direct result of his spiritual understanding; that is, of his knowledge of God and God's creation. According to the New Testament, he healed all manner of sin and disease among the people; and not only so, but he raised the dead. No one can study the life of Jesus as it is set forth in the Gospels without concluding that he was divinely inspired, and that it was because of this that he was able to forgive sin by destroying the evil beliefs which caused it, to heal disease by overcoming the illusions of material sense which sustained it, and to raise the dead by knowing the indestructibility of Life.

The disciples of Jesus practiced healing after the manner of their Master. At one time he sent out the twelve for this purpose; at another, he sent out seventy of his followers, to heal and save as he himself had done. The seventy on their return said to him with joy, "Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name" (Luke 10:17).

James was certain of the healing power of righteous prayer, for he says in his epistle (5:16), "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much;" and in a preceding verse, "The prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up." Paul also knew and practiced the Way-shower's method of healing. He wrote to the Corinthians (II Cor. 12:12), "Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds." Plainly, the healings wrought by Jesus and his followers were not the result of material drugging or manipulation, but of divine Mind expressed in thinking that was in accord with spiritual truth.
