Testimonies of Healing

For twenty-four years Christian Science...

From the April 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For twenty-four years Christian Science has been meeting my needs. I should like to mention an outstanding instance of protection and healing. We were spending the day with friends at a summer cottage. In one of two outboard motorboats on the river there were three adults and three children, including our little boy and girl, and in the second boat were my husband and the man operating the boat. The latter were going at a high rate of speed when they noticed that the first boat was directly in their path. The driver tried desperately to steer around it, but the rudder had become locked, so he was powerless to control it. My husband, recognizing that they were beyond all possible human help, turned his thought unreservedly to God, knowing that only He could protect them all from tragedy. Suddenly, when they were within a few feet of crashing into the side of the other boat, their boat lifted out of the water, shot over the top of the first boat (dragging the outboard motor above the heads of the occupants), and landed right side up on the other side, without one person from either boat being thrown into the water. However, the impact of the outboard motor caused a leak, and the occupants were picked up by a passing rowboat.

We then discovered that disaster had been averted only by inches, as our nine-year-old son had received an ugly-looking bruise on the head. But he never once admitted that he was anything but "all right." I worked for him in Christian Science all night and the next day, and, except for appearances, he was fine. In about two weeks every evidence of the experience had disappeared. This child's calm fortitude greatly impressed those of the group who were not students of Christian Science, and the complete protection of the other seven occupants of the two boats was cause for great rejoicing.

When we have prayed, as did Elisha for his servant, that our eyes might be opened, we have proved, in the continuous unfoldment of supply, that "man's extremity is God's opportunity."
