MAN, THE IDEA OF GOD

[Original article in German]

From the April 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Nothing is real and eternal, —nothing is Spirit,—but God and His idea." So we read on page 71 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.

In the first chapter of Genesis it is recorded that God made man in His image and likeness. Man, therefore, is God's idea or reflection, God's son.

Many people seem to have no very clear picture of God and man, His image and likeness, and many consider themselves too self-sufficient and independent to need to have recourse to God for help. Others are convinced that God is too far away, too elevated and glorious, to be in a position to afford any real aid to men. The belief that God has imposed on us distress and suffering as punishment for the transgressions of our ancestors is also widespread.
