THE FULLNESS OF LIFE

From the April 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One of the desires of the human heart is for a fuller, a more complete and abundant sense of life. This is a natural, righteous desire, and should have, must have, its rightful fulfillment. Christian Science has come to reveal this life more abundant, so that the grandeur, the glory of life shall be brought into human experience, thus satisfying the deepest human need. The greatest Teacher of all time, Christ Jesus, showed the way to true life when he declared, "This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." Thus, true life is attained as we know God aright—as we scientifically understand His true nature and attributes.

In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 465), Mary Baker Eddy defines God in part as "Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." Since God is Spirit and Life, the true knowledge of God must come through spiritual discernment. As thought is purified, we gain clearer views of God, and thus rise into a higher and better sense of existence. We enter into life which reflects Life, God, through purity and spirituality. The pure in heart see God, and thus perceive more of Life in its varied manifestations.

God is Life and infinite Mind. We could not conceive of lifeless Mind or mindless Life. Mind is expressed through its ideas. Since Mind is infinite, its ideas must be inimitably expressed. Then Mind is never limited, finite, or organic, but infinite, immeasurable. Life, therefore, is never limited or finite, but infinite, boundless, unrestricted, and free. These divine facts are entirely contrary to human theories and doctrines. False education would have us believe that life comes from a finite, material source; that it is limited to a certain span or duration; that it is hedged about with limitations and mortal beliefs. The Science of Life destroys these human vagaries, which have no divine basis. They are substanceless nothingness. Life could no more be limited than God could be limited. Life is eternal, since God is eternal. No idea of God could cease to exist or fail to express Him. God's creation has its being in Him whose work is immutable, perfect, and indestructible. God's ideas are inseparable from Him, coexistent with Him. They could not become detached from their divine source and wander away into the realm of finiteness, evil, or mortality, for, as we read in Psalms, "With thee is the fountain of life." God's ideas are infinite, and are forever manifested through man.
