"MIND'S CONTROL OVER THE UNIVERSE"

From the April 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Mind's control over the universe, including man, is no longer an open question, but is demonstrable Science," writes Mary Baker Eddy on page 171 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." That is a sweeping statement of spiritual truth. It will readily be admitted by many that God governs His own universe, but it may be more difficult for them to understand how this can be demonstrated or proved.

First of all, consider how Christian Science regards God and His universe. It reveals that God is infinite Mind, and that because He is Mind, He expresses Himself in ideas, which are infinite in number. These spiritual ideas constitute the real universe, including man. Further, Christian Science reveals that since God is infinite good, all His ideas—the real or spiritual universe—are perfect, and perfectly governed, perfectly controlled, every instant. The student of Christian Science is in no doubt as to "Mind's control over the universe." He understands that every idea therein is governed by perfect intelligence. He knows that the real man is never for a moment under the control of aught but perfect Mind, and he is learning through Christian Science how to demonstrate this divine fact.

It should be understood that God's universe, the universe of spiritual ideas, is not the so-called material universe. God's universe is altogether spiritual. And since it is infinite, what must be concluded of the so-called material universe? That it is unreal, an illusory or false concept. There are not two universes, then, one spiritual, the other material. There is only one real universe, the universe of Spirit. Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 207): "There is but one primal cause. Therefore there can be no effect from any other cause, and there can be no reality in aught which does not proceed from this great and only cause." God, Spirit, is the only cause. That which He causes is spiritual—the spiritual universe. Hence, the material universe is not caused by God, and is therefore unreal.
