PROSE WORKS AND POEMS

From the April 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is a fact well known to students of Christian Science that the Golden Text, Responsive Reading, and citations constituting the weekly Bible Lessons, published in the Christian Science Quarterly, are taken from the Authorized King James Version of the Bible and from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.

Of the Bible Lesson, Mrs. Eddy has said that on it "the prosperity of Christian Science largely depends" (Manual of The Mother Church, Art. Ill, Sect. 1). Christian Scientists, therefore, habitually study the Lesson-Sermons, which they consider a part of their daily spiritual food. In addition to the use of Science and Health in studying the Lessons, students read and study this textbook daily for the purpose of gaining added inspiration and instruction. They turn to it continually, in connection with the Bible, for spiritual refreshment and guidance in their practice and in daily living.

However, many Christian Scientists of long experience in practice and teaching also find great help in the frequent reading of Mrs. Eddy's other writings. Many of these writings have for some time been published in one volume called "Prose Works Other Than Science and Health," and in the volume known as "Poetical Works." Both the prose articles and the poems contained in these two volumes have proved an inspiration and encouragement to students in need of help and comfort.
