Before I came into Christian Science I was an avowed atheist. I believed that existence was a matter of chance and circumstance, and that death was the end of it all. Christian Science changed all this. It turned my view of life from the temporal to the eternal, from the material to the spiritual. Christian Science gave me God, who is my Redeemer.
Through Christian Science I have been able to lessen many pronounced tendencies, such as impatience, prejudices, anger, and resentment. Reflecting divine Love, even in a small degree, tends to annul such characteristics and progressively develops more humane qualities.
Criticism on my part made it difficult for me to accept Christian Science when the need for it arose. I had been ill for a long time and was constantly growing worse until the doctor in charge of the case said to me, "Set your house in order, for your time is short." When I asked him if nothing remained to be done, he replied: "All that is known to medical science has been done for you. May God help you!" Knowing that the doctor was not a religious man, in the generally accepted term, I asked, "Why do you say, 'May God help you'?" He answered: "In a professional way I have seen it happen that when we medical men were through with a patient, God did help him. That is all I can tell you."
