Christian Science came to me in answer to prayer, at a time of great need. I thank God daily for His priceless gift, and am indeed grateful that Mrs. Eddy was spiritually-minded enough to discern the fact that God's law underlay all the wonderful works of Christ Jesus, and that she has made this law understandable and practical to this age in her inspired writings, which unlock the treasures of Truth contained in the Bible, and enable students of Christian Science to do the works which Christ Jesus prophesied his followers would do.
Many are the blessings which have come into our home since I took up the study of Christian Science. My daughter was healed very quickly of severe burns. She was making jam, and when it was finished she pulled the pan too near the edge of the stove. It tipped; the pan and contents fell on the floor, and my daughter fell full length in the boiling jam. Being a very hot day in summer, she had only two thin coverings on her back. I helped her to rise, and asked if she would have Christian Science help or a doctor, for I knew something must be done immediately. She chose Christian Science. On removing her clothes I found that the whole of her right shoulder blade was badly burned, as well as her arms and legs, which had been splashed. After wiping away as much jam as possible I put her to bed, giving her some copies of the Christian Science Sentinel; but she was in such pain she could not read, so repeated over and over the Lord's Prayer with its spiritual interpretation (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, pp. 16, 17), and "the scientific statement of being" (ibid., p. 468).
We were living in the country at the time, so could not get into immediate touch with a practitioner; but within an hour we were able to send a message through to the city. In the meantime the thought came to my daughter, "Well, seeing that I have been declaring all this truth, I had better act as though I believed it." With that, she got up. Late in the afternoon she was playing and singing at the piano. She did not lose one night's sleep, and within a week was playing tennis. The pain was quickly destroyed, and although it was some weeks before the burns had entirely healed, they have left no scar.
