From my own experience I can truthfully testify that there certainly is a good God to whom we may go for help and comfort.
I gave up study for the ministry in 1910, because at that time I doubted God's existence, and as my prayers for a revelation of God appeared not to be answered, I decided to seek Him in my life experience, as many people in Bible times had sought and found Him. The Scriptures had taught me that He is Truth, which liberates those who know it; thus divine Truth became the quest of my life.
In 1918, while serving in the United States Army, I was in great despair and life seemed not worth living, because until then I had not found any proof of God's existence. He appeared to be far away; I was not even sure that He existed, while evil, hate, and suffering seemed to be all around. I could not reconcile the seeming existence of evil in its many forms to the existence of a good God. One day I was searching for a good book in an army Y. M. C. A. library, when I was attracted by the title, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The words "Key to the Scriptures" attracted my special attention, for I knew that the Scriptures contained many hidden treasures which I longed to find. Science and Health became my dearest possession, which I earnestly and eagerly studied, and words are inadequate to describe my happiness and gratitude for the great and wonderful revelation of God it brought me, for through this book I became conscious of the presence of the Christ.
