At even when the sun was set the door
Opened, and then the gracious Master came,
Full of compassion for the sick and poor,
The blind, the sorrowful, the halt and lame.
Uplifted, eager faces, outstretched hands
Besought his touch and loving, tender word;
He saw them strain against the cruel bands
That error had imposed. The mighty sword
Of Spirit smote the shackles, and they fell;
Blind eyes were filled with light, deaf ears could hear
His words of calm assurance: All is well.
And out of heavy hearts departed fear.
The sun's warm afterglow lit up that scene
Of glorious healing. How they must have sung
Their praise to God for blessings that had been
Bestowed through him who long had walked among
Them quietly, in grace and quickening power—
The Son of man proclaimed the Son of God!
Obedient steps had led him to this hour,
To prove, as Moses did, that matter's rod
Is impotent, when seen and understood.
What joy must have prevailed in Galilee
When night fell softly on the multitude,
Healed of their false beliefs, awake and free!
