The summer of 1925 always stands out vividly to me, for I feel that it was then I began to know God as Life. Never having known what it meant to be well, I had finally reached the point where hope and encouragement from medical aid were denied me. "Nothing more can be done," had been the verdict. However, a suggestion was made that a change of climate might help temporarily, so an arduous trip to the mountains of western North Carolina was taken. Although it was only a few hundred miles from home, it took me almost a week to reach my destination, because of my extreme weakness. I passed a Christian Science church on my way from the railway station to the hotel, and a great longing to visit the church services to learn why Mrs. Eddy and Christian Science were so bitterly ridiculed, led me to attend the communion service.
In the Manual of The Mother Church (Art. VIII, Sect. 5) our Leader provides that "the prayers in Christian Science churches shall be offered for the congregations collectively and exclusively." The fact that within fifteen minutes of the beginning of that service I experienced a beautiful healing, was direct evidence that this congregation was obedient to this rule.
Since that memorable Sunday there have been many outstanding proofs in our home that Christian Science, when rightly applied, can heal any situation, no matter how severe. For these healings I am truly grateful, but above and beyond the material realm are the unspeakable joys that came as the result of class instruction, which enabled me to comprehend, in some degree, that "all is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 468); that man lives in the eternal now, heir to all that is good.
