Christian Science came to our home over thirty-eight years ago, and during that time has proved to be the great and only physician, healing mental, physical, moral, and financial difficulties. At that time I was a mental and physical wreck, with the verdict of incurability put upon me. We tried and tested the skill of the doctors of different schools—allopathic, homeopathic, electric, and osteopathic, but with no lasting benefit. Temporary relief was experienced through the use of morphine, and to this I finally became an addict. Suffering became intolerable. When discouraged, defeated, and depleted, I learned of Christian Science through a piece of literature which was handed to me. Although my father had been a practicing physician for many years, he encouraged me to look into Christian Science. I did so, and was healed of my ills and of the morphine habit. This habit had come upon me through the so-called law of heredity. My father, his mother, and his uncle had all been victimized by it, but through the study, application, and help given me by Christian Science, this law was so completely broken that no touch or trace of it has been known to bind any other member of our family. I learned that God had not cursed me, but had blessed me; that I was not diseased; that I could not suffer for the sins of others, and that God is my Father-Mother, always harmonious.
Throughout these many years I have been an active witness for Truth, and for many years have been free, but over a year ago I was again confronted with a problem, that of a broken arm. One day I suddenly slipped on a highly polished floor and sustained the injury. It occurred on a Saturday afternoon during a holiday season, and although three or more surgeons were called, there was no satisfactory response. Then an older brother came in, and insisted that I go with him to a neighboring city to get attention at once. We went, but had to wait in the doctor's office for several hours, only to be told that the case should be taken to a hospital. Upon calling the surgeon there, it was found that he, too, had left for a vacation. By that time I was able to take my stand, and I realized that I could work out this problem at home, with God, the great Physician, for, as our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, says (Science and Health, p. 233), "Every day makes its demands upon us for higher proofs rather than professions of Christian power."
Upon arriving home I asked a Christian Scientist to bind up the arm tightly. This was done, and metaphysical help was lovingly given me for a short time. Few Christian Scientists knew of this experience, for I attended church services and business meetings very soon thereafter, and saw people daily in the practice. One day, while writing a letter to someone in need, I heard a noise, a click, and the setting took place. There was very little suffering during any part of the time. I was so glad to realize more fully than ever before that God is the eternal builder and the great adjuster, and that I had a positive proof of the efficacy of Christian Science healing. I was especially grateful that during this entire period I was able to maintain the standard of Christian Science in every way. More than a year has passed since then, and in obedience to the Scriptural command, "Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God," I have been experiencing my God-given dominion.— Reading, Pennsylvania.
