I wish to express my deep and sincere appreciation for Christian Science, and for what it has done for me. I should like to tell how a smiling face led me to a Christian Science church and saved my life.
Nineteen years ago, at seven o'clock on a Wednesday evening, I was walking along a downtown street in Seattle headed for Puget Sound, where I intended to jump in and end my life because of despondency and ill-health. I had made all the preparations for this move; but God's arm was outstretched to save me, for within three blocks of the Sound, as I was passing a large department store, I saw a woman looking in the display window. She turned and looked at me and smiled. Her smile was like a ray of light, and I had never before seen a face so filled with sweetness and peace.
I kept on walking for about a block. Then suddenly I stopped. I seemed unable to go on. That wonderful face was before me, shining brighter every moment. I turned back and saw this woman in the same place. She turned, smiled again, and then started to walk away. I followed her for nine blocks to a Christian Science church, which she entered. I too entered. She disappeared when I got inside, and I was never able to identify her in the years that I attended that church.
