Testimonies of Healing

Many years ago, when I was burdened...

From the December 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Many years ago, when I was burdened with a false sense of anxiety and responsibility, Christian Science was brought to my attention by a friend. When it was explained to me it seemed almost too good to be true, but in the many years since then I have had positive proof of what Christian Science accomplishes.

About three years ago I became very ill with what appeared to be a poisoned leg, which assumed alarming symptoms. Work was taken up by a Christian Science practitioner, but the condition grew worse. A member of my family, who is an earnest Christian Scientist, read to me from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, although at times I was hardly conscious of what she was reading.

In spite of the evidence of the senses we clung steadfastly to the truth that God is man's Life. After two days my condition began to improve, and I was able to listen to and understand the truth which the practitioner voiced to me. During his visit he repeated these words of our Leader from "Unity of Good" (p. 22): "Thou shalt not admit that error is something to know or be known, to eat or be eaten, to see or be seen, to feel or be felt." I remembered these words many times, particularly when I tried to put my foot to the ground. The pain was intense, but I refused to concede reality to the lie and knew I could stand in Truth. And although it meant clinging to the furniture for support, I kept on until bit by bit the lie was silenced and the severe pain subsided. I thanked God with each step I took.
