THE GIFT OF THE HOLY GHOST

From the December 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THE great preacher, John the Baptist, knowing that the people were wondering whether or not he were the expected Messiah, declared, "I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire."

The life of Christ Jesus, including his many demonstrations of healing, shows clearly that the Holy Ghost—which in the fourteenth chapter of John is termed "the Spirit of truth"—was ever with him. Not only did he manifest this "Spirit of truth" in such measure that others recognized its presence with him, but he was able to rouse his disciples to receive it after his ascension.

In the Gospel of John, it is clear that the Master identified his spiritual selfhood with "the Spirit of truth." He declared to his disciples that he would come again and receive them unto himself. He said, "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you."
