GATHERING UP THE FRAGMENTS

From the December 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

WHEN Jesus fed the multitudes with five loaves and two fishes, he charged his disciples to "gather up the fragments . . . that nothing be lost." They did as they were bid and, according to the record in John's Gospel, "filled twelve baskets with the fragments."

To one student of Christian Science this parable brought enlightenment on the subject of supply. He saw that the divine Principle, Love, which was in operation then to provide for its ideas, is in operation now, but that it is for us to recognize and utilize our divine relationship to Principle. We must reflect and demonstrate Love if we are to claim the provision and protection of Love in human affairs. We must express the divine intelligence which is ours as the reflection of divine Mind. In short, we must be "doers of the word, and not hearers only."

When the ten lepers were healed, only one returned to give thanks. But may we not presume that, in addition to his healing, he received spiritual understanding? When Jesus healed the withered hand, he asked the man to stretch forth his hand, and as he did so "it was restored whole, like as the other."
