MAN IS SAFE

From the December 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

INDIVIDUALS have in the war period been seeking safety underground and in the country far away from bombs and bullets. They have sought to preserve in a material way that which they believe is a material, vulnerable life and body. Isaiah saw man's safety to be within himself, for he wrote, "And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land." Who is this man whose shelter is within himself?

In the first chapter of Genesis this man is described as the image and likeness of God. Through Christian Science we learn that God is divine Principle, Life, Mind, Soul, Spirit, Truth, Love, substance, and that because man is the reflection of God, he reflects all that God is. This reflection, man, cognizes himself as the expression of the one divine consciousness. So man is conscious of himself as idea, inseparable from the divine Mind he reflects. Now, we know that God is Spirit, not matter, and we cannot think of God as being perishable. Therefore, God's image or reflection, man, is as safe from attack, injury, or annihilation as is God Himself, for none of the qualities which man reflects, or which constitute his being, are destructible. Christian Science reveals these true facts of existence, and through the utilization of its rules individuals are enabled to prove or demonstrate man's spiritual oneness with his Father-Mother God, and hence his immutable safety.

Today there are many examples of the truth of these facts. Men in our armed forces who utilize their understanding of Christian Science are finding that knowledge of their spiritual manhood is virtually their hiding place from the destructive forces of evil. This truth is as the "shadow of a great rock in a weary land," because the spiritual understanding these men possess radiates its light and comfort to all those about them. We hear interesting accounts of their comrades being drawn to Truth through their example of love and courage, of foresight and trust, as well as by their actual preservation from harm. This is the Christ made manifest, lighting the way for men. This understanding is a veritable ark—a place of perfect safety.
