SPIRITUAL understanding is all-important to the demonstration of Christian Science. But evil sometimes suggests to the student of Christian Science that he has not sufficient understanding to apply his religion effectively to his human affairs. Occasionally, one becomes entangled with the argument that though he may grasp the statement of Science intellectually, he does not understand it spiritually; that he may have a degree of faith but too often it seems inadequate.
Such arguments may seem to crowd us into feeling depressed and uncertain during some time of great stress when, of all times, we should hold fast to our understanding of the power of God. If this be so, it is time to turn our mental gaze to God and discover our true selfhood, the selfhood which God gives us, and which never descends into the pit of self-deception. As we understand our true being in the image of God, we shall have all the spiritual understanding we need for any occasion. It is not difficult to see why this is so. God is the all-knowing Mind. He understands Himself and His creation. He is the all-wise, the supreme intelligence, the source of spiritual understanding; and man is one with Him. God imparts His thoughts and reveals Himself to His man.
In proportion to our demonstration of man's oneness with the divine Mind do we find our understanding of Christian Science increasing and our reflection of the infinite intelligence of Spirit lifting us above the belief that our comprehension of the truth is merely intellectual. In reality our faith, which is essential to the development of spiritual understanding in human consciousness, never falters because the Father endows man with an enduring, steadfast faith.
