Christian Science came into our home when I was a small child and healed my father after three physicians had pronounced his case hopeless. Attendance at Sunday School and membership in a branch church were a joy in my childhood. Proof of the ever-presence of God and the efficacy of Christian Science was a rock for my family to stand on when faced with criticism in the community.
With no knowledge of material aids to health, I married one who felt the need of such help for himself and later for our three boys. When they began to go to the Christian Science Sunday School, I renewed my study and joined The Mother Church; and from then on I felt a sustaining aid in taking my stand as a student of Christian Science. Many basic lessons were learned, and sufficient supply, a true sense of home, healing of children's diseases, patience, and a greater love for all mankind were experienced.
During an epidemic of smallpox, one of our sons and I had light cases of the disease, and the boys and I were quarantined. This was an opportunity for me to learn never to fear error or contagion or to rebel against it as a reality. Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 390): "Suffer no claim of sin or of sickness to grow upon the thought. Dismiss it with an abiding conviction that it is illegitimate, because you know that God is no more the author of sickness than He is of sin." As I refused, promptly, to accept any suggestions of discord, and knew that man, as God's image and likeness, is in the midst of harmony, I found that good unfolded, and the healing came through Christian Science.
