THE ENFORCEMENT OF GOD'S LAW

From the March 1949 issue of The Christian Science Journal

AN ideal system of law should be based upon rules of custom and precedent which, when enforced, become a benefit to mankind. Certain characteristics are essential to the varied forms of legal systems. They should incorporate righteousness, impartiality, beneficence, and justice. Because human laws can only approximate these requisites, such laws are not wholly perfect. Divine law alone fulfills and completely satisfies these requirements. God's law is the invariable manifestation of Mind, the infallible activity of divine Principle. It signifies perfect cause and perfect effect. It is the only real law.

Since man is not cause but effect, he is formed according to God's law of creation as expounded in the first chapter of Genesis (verse 27), "God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him." The Supreme Lawgiver establishes perfect government, perfect justice, freedom, harmony, and unfailing good. This perfect law of God is applicable to all men. It covers every aspect of their human experience, every phase of health, happiness, safety, subsistence, activity, vocation, relationship, and success. Nothing pertaining to one's welfare is outside of or exterior to the operation and successful control of God's law. This law and its effect are known to God, while the human result is evident and known to men.

Law to be law must be enforceable and enforced. Without enforcement law is a nullity. Juridical law illustrates this. Laws that exist only in statutory form, or in the minds of the judges, or even in the precepts of the common law, are to all practical purposes no laws at all. Enforcement by legal procedure is necessary. Likewise in the spiritual realm law and its enforcement are inseparably joined. Divine law is enforced by reason of Mind's invariable expression of its spiritual forces.
