I became acquainted with Christian Science more than forty years ago. At that time my husband and I were living in the United States. Poor business had been our ruin, and our health was much impaired. We were Protestants, but I no longer practiced my religion, for I thought that if there were a God, He would have helped us during our trials. In the boarding house where we lived, we witnessed the complete healing in three months of a boarder who was supposedly dying of tuberculosis. This healing made such an impression on us that I was emboldened to ask his wife what doctor was helping him. She replied that he was receiving Christian Science treatment. We had never heard of this religion, although we had lived in the United States for seven years.
As we desired some explanation, this woman lent us a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. After reading this wonderful book for an hour, I knew that I had found the truth which I had sought since childhood, and at the same time I saw that if I could assimilate its teaching, we would be freed from our troubles. Every free moment, therefore, I read the book, and also the Christian Science periodicals, especially the testimonies of healing. I began at once to feel better physically. Then my husband found a good job, quite unexpectedly, which brought us back to our own country. Science accomplished all this, with the help of a practitioner. In addition, through my own work during the first year of study, I was healed of nasal catarrh from which I had suffered since the age of fourteen. Violent headaches, distention of the stomach which I had had since childhood, fear of storms, excessive timidity, and extreme temper, supposed to be hereditary, were also healed. All these errors disappeared through my study of Science and Health.
My husband and I have had so many demonstrations that it would be difficult to enumerate them all. As an officer in the First World War, my husband found himself in terrifying places, yet after five years he returned home without a scratch. He learned through experience what Christian Science can do. We were both healed of influenza at the peak of the so-called epidemic, by helping each other in Christian Science. In two specific instances, when the depression was severe, we found exactly what was needed in the way of lodging.
