The first words that told me of Christian Science were, "Good is God." From that moment God began to reveal Himself to me as good. I was on my way to a specialist, having been told that only an operation could help me, and that even if the operation were performed the results might not be successful. Instead of consulting the specialist, I began to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and obtained the help of a Christian Science practitioner. I had not thought I was at all in need of religion. However, as I read the first lines of the chapter on Prayer I knew with absolute certainty that I had found the truth. The desire for physical healing sank into insignificance as I read the textbook with absorbed interest for hours every day.
I felt the divine authority of its statements; they satisfied reason, rebuked skepticism, and opened the very gates of heaven. With a deep sense of reverence and humility I recognized the demands of God and the complete revolution of thought required to meet those demands. In less than a fortnight I was healed.
During many years that revelation of God as good has continued to unfold. As I applied the teachings of Christian Science to every aspect of my daily life and work, my whole outlook on life began to change. Enlarged opportunities appeared, and my interests extended and expanded. Physical troubles yielded quickly, and I had many instantaneous healings, among them those of bronchitis, sprained ankles, pleurisy, ulcerated throat, and influenza. I was awakened one night by a sharp pain in my elbow and found a scorpion on my pillow. I picked up the pillow and threw the scorpion out the window. My first feeling was one of astonishment, as I had never before seen a scorpion in the house. Then I turned to divine Love, and immediately Jesus' promise to his disciples came to my thought (Luke 10:19), "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you."
