"PERFECTION IS NORMAL,—NOT MIRACULOUS"

From the May 1950 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Nowadays we hear a great deal of such terms as "precision made," used to describe the mathematical accuracy of mechanical appliances and inventions in many fields. The production of such precision tools and instruments requires a knowledge and application of some of the higher laws of mathematics, which can be utilized by anyone having an understanding thereof.

It is significant that Mary Baker Eddy, in explaining and illustrating the exactness of Christian Science, oftentimes symbolizes its teachings by mathematical terms. Mathematics, as we know, is considered an exact or demonstrable science. Thus there is in some measure a parallel between mathematical and metaphysical Science. Both demand perfection in premise and conclusion. The demonstration of Christian Science must be precise and exact, and the results infallible. Thus the Master, Christ Jesus, and our beloved Leader could heal without fail, and their demonstrations were nearly always instantaneous.

In "Miscellaneous Writings" Mrs. Eddy tells us (p. 104): "According to Christian Science, perfection is normal,—not miraculous. Clothed, and in its right Mind, man's individuality is sinless, deathless, harmonious, eternal." Christian Science enables us to understand the perfect as the only real. It shows that evil and imperfection are unrealities, and not the truth of God and man. With an understanding of God's perfect law, Christian Science, one can prove his dominion over all that is unlike God.
