Testimonies of Healing

The reading of the Bible was a daily...

From the May 1950 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The reading of the Bible was a daily event in my home when I was a child. I often wondered why remarkable healings were performed without drugs or operations in Bible times and, as far as I knew, not in our times. I attended various churches in search of an explanation of this and of a reasonable description of God. This I failed to find until I earnestly studied Christian Science. Its teaching that God is Mind and that He sends good only, never evil, sounded like a reasonable description of a God of love, as the Bible teaches Him to be.

Christian Science teaches that Life is eternal. I proved this in an experience I had in 1935. A ladder I was standing on slipped from under me, and I fell a considerable distance onto a hardwood floor. To those gathered around me, I appeared to be dead. I knew I had passed into that experience, but this brought a realization to me that there is no death and that matter has only a fictitious existence. Man is spiritual, not material. My coming back was interpreted by those around me as a lifeless body coming back to life, but to me it was a demonstration of the continuous activity of divine Mind. This demonstration included the instantaneous setting of a broken bone and the quick healing of a gash on the side of my forehead and of the nerve feeding the left side of my face. There was no concussion and no swelling. I had the help of a Christian Science practitioner in making this demonstration. The healing was complete and permanent.

Over twelve years later the cuff of my overalls caught on an electric power drill which I was operating. I was quickly wrapped around the drill, my clothes were torn off, and I was battered against steel from head to foot. Although my skull was severely fractured and other bones were broken, I did not suffer pain and did not lose consciousness, because Christian Science had taught me that brain is not Mind and Mind is never in matter. I knew that God is the source of all right thoughts. When released from the drill, I carried on a normal conversation, answering questions in detail. One of the men said that it was a miracle; others repeated that it was remarkable.
