Today, as for centuries, mankind is reaching out for the answer to his longing for peace, health, and supply. Christian Science gives this answer to all who will arouse themselves from the mesmeric belief of a life apart from God. The desire for this understanding came to me over thirty-five years ago when my need was great, and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy was given to me by a nurse in a tuberculosis sanatorium.
The first reading of the chapter on Prayer will always stand out clearly in my memory. At first it all seemed so simple and offered me hope such as I had never known. But I was to learn that the destruction of years of wrong thinking demands the laying down of many false beliefs. At a later date the hereditary tuberculosis was entirely destroyed, and I learned from Mrs. Eddy (Science and Health, p. 574) that "the very circumstance, which your suffering sense deems wrathful and afflictive, Love can make an angel entertained unawares." Again in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" Mrs. Eddy tells us (pp. 149, 150): "Remember, thou canst be brought into no condition, be it ever so severe, where Love has not been before thee and where its tender lesson is not awaiting thee. Therefore despair not nor murmur, for that which seeketh to save, to heal, and to deliver, will guide thee, if thou seekest this guidance."
Only those who have experienced healings can understand the gratitude and freedom that come when our battle has been won by complete reliance on God. God's law, understood and rightly applied, is all we ever need in overcoming evil.
