THE EFFICACY OF PRAYER IN SUNDAY SCHOOL WORK

From the July 1950 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A YOUNG girl who attended a Christian Science Sunday School became seriously ill. Although she had Christian Science treatment from a faithful practitioner, relatives became alarmed and voiced fear of the necessity of amputation. Aroused by their concern, the girl decided to change practitioners. She recalled a Sunday School teacher who had impressed her by her strong faith in prayer and requested her father to telephone this teacher and ask her to pray for her.

Later the girl related: "As soon as my father told me that the teacher had said she would gladly pray for me, the fear began to slip away. In a few hours I was asleep, and when I awakened the next morning, the horrible picture was not there." Is not this what Isaiah meant when he said (41: 12),"Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them, even them that contended with thee: they that war against thee shall be as nothing, and as a thing of nought"?

Why should one ever doubt the power of prayer? The prophets of old and Jesus proved the power of prayer to meet the needs of mankind. The Way-shower gave his disciples the following wonderful promise (John 14: 13, 141):"Whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it." The disciples evidently felt the need of knowing better how to pray. On one occasion one of them asked Jesus to teach them to pray (Luke 11:1). In answer to this request Jesus gave "the most excellent of all prayers," which has since been called the Lord's Prayer.
