Testimonies of Healing

The first line of the first hymn in the...

From the July 1950 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The first line of the first hymn in the Christian Science Hymnal reads, "Be Thou, O God, exalted high." In the hearts of Christian Scientists and in their testimonies appearing in the Christian Science publications God is, indeed, exalted high, for many, like myself, have had ample proof of the life-giving and health-giving power of this great religion.

I am grateful for Mrs. Eddy's purity, perseverance, and unselfishness in giving this teaching to the world. I know that because Christian Science is scientifically Christian and Christianly scientific it can never fail when property and faithfully applied, and I am increasingly thankful to the practitioners and friends who have helped me apply it.

One of the physical healings I have had through Christian Science was that of a nervous breakdown. For over two weeks the trouble did not yield, but when conditions seemed most alarming, the practitioner sent me a message that I must do something for myself. Then I turned, with an awakened thought, to our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. As the book was opened for me, the first words that met my eyes were (p. 242),"In patient obedience to a patient God, let us labor to dissolve with the universal solvent of Love the adamant of error,—self-will, self-justification, and self-love,—which wars against spirituality and is the law of sin and death." I was suddenly keenly aware of the need for specific improvement and healing in my character and in my life, and an earnest desire was instantly born to live more selflessly. In about fifteen minutes I was dressed and enjoying a hearty meal. The healing was perfect and permanent.
