Little did I realize when coming to the United States in 1917 what a happy life of usefulness was before me. The words Christian Science were new to me; but it was not long before I learned that those words meant religion—a religion that would meet my every need.
I had been reared to believe that God was a Father who thought it sometimes best to take away human parents, who punished by sending sickness and deprivation, and who gave to some and took away from others. But with an understanding of Christian Science I did not feel alone in the world. God was my Father-Mother. Harmony came into my experience as I felt the love of the motherhood of God and the strength of His fatherhood. This began to be evidenced in happy home surroundings, lovely friendships, progressive activity, more abundant supply, and better health.
Many valuable lessons were learned while I was at college. Absolute reliance on Principle proved fruitful when sickness kept me bedridden just before a Christmas vacation. When it appeared that my holidays would have to be spent in the college hospital I turned wholeheartedly to God for guidance and was led to rise, though with great difficulty, to telephone somewhere for lodging. As I sat quietly in the booth realizing Love's presence the telephone rang; a church member was calling to see if I would like to spend the holidays with her family. When my condition was explained, her loving response was, "I will send a taxi immediately." While I was at her home the illness was quickly overcome and the vacation was enjoyed; and I returned to college better prepared to meet new demands.
