The basis of all Christian Science demonstration is the glorious truth of being that God, good, is All-in-all. This truth, though infinite, is applicable to every human need, for it reveals that evil or error is nothingness, is impotent to disturb the eternal harmony of God's creation. Realizing this truth, we are enabled to attain that spiritual peace and assurance which are indispensable in healing. Thus we approach that measure of true discipleship which Christ Jesus demanded when he declared (John 14:12), "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also."
In the fourth chapter of Mark's Gospel we read the inspiring narrative of the Master's stilling of "a great storm." Boisterous winds and roaring waves hurled themselves upon the ship in which he was traveling "asleep on a pillow." His disciples, frightened by the testimony of the material senses, broke in rudely upon Jesus' rest with the reproachful cry, "Master, carest thou not that we perish?" Responding to their urgent call for help, "he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm."
In this demonstration of spiritual power, as in all of Jesus' works, there was embodied a great spiritual lesson, expressed in the Master's words to his disciples, "Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?" His words of earnest censure implied that, but for their fearful mental state, they too could have stilled the storm in its ferocity. Had he not assured them earlier that day, "Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God"?
