How well did Jesus know the mountain's calm
With hallowed peace—alone with God in prayer,
Discerning false beliefs as void of law
Or power to hold mankind within the grasp
Of sin, with all its myriad claims of pain.
One day, descending from communion's mount,
He saw a pressing multitude surround
A stricken lad, bowed down with grim despair.
His father cried that he had brought his son
To the disciples for their prayers to heal,
Yet healing of the evil had not come.
With deep compassion Jesus plainly spoke,
"O faithless generation, how long
Shall I be with you? ... bring him unto me."
His knowing God as All-in-all revealed
True prayer and fasting that cast demons out.
The evil spirit waged a cruel war
Of hate, resisting Love's release.
But Jesus, firm in Truth, denied it power
And spoke commandingly, "Come out of him,"
Beholding God's reflection present there.
No longer could the lie withstand God's truth,
The healing Christ. Transformed, the lad arose
And knew his freedom as a child of God.
