As one who has benefited immeasurably from the healing efficacy of Christian Science, I wish to offer my testimony in humble gratitude for this precious teaching which our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, has given us so freely. On page 237 of "Miscellaneous Writings" she says: "This is a period of doubt, inquiry, speculation, selfishness; of divided interests, marvellous good, and mysterious evil. But sin can only work out its own destruction; and reform does and must push on the growth of mankind."
Although I have known no other religion than Christian Science, there was a time during my teen-age period when I rebelled against it. During that "period of doubt, inquiry, speculation" and "divided interests" I drifted away from the teachings of Science and acquired some bad habits, which later had to be corrected.
For some time during the Second World War, I attended Christian Science services at an Air Force base. The Christian Science Wartime Minister asked me one day if I would serve as Second Reader. I replied that he surely did not want me to do this, because I smoked and had other habits that I knew were not in accordance with the teachings of Christian Science.
