GOD'S LAW IS A DIVINE ENERGY

From the May 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

How many mortals realize that God's law is a divine energy inexorably grinding to dust, nothingness, the vast range of material beliefs that have afflicted mankind? Some may say, "can this be true when we see around us calamity, sickness, and the constant threat of world upheaval?" The divine energy is ever at work, wearing away the adamant of material belief and its lies of sin, disease, discord, and death, thus lifting humanity into higher realms of thought and action. Through the practice of Christian Science innumerable people have been blessed by the scientific application of God's law, have learned a better way of life, and have found relief from misery, doubt and fear, sickness and poverty.

In "Miscellaneous Writings" Mary Baker Eddy states (p. 208): "This is the law of Truth to error, 'Thou shalt surely die.' This law is a divine energy. Mortals cannot prevent the fulfilment of this law: it covers all sin and its effects." With these dynamic words Mrs. Eddy challenges all evil and foretells its doom. What are the effects of sin but disease, mortal distress, and death? Paul said (Rom. 6:23), "The wages of sin is death." But the wise man said (Prov. 13:14), "The law of the wise is a fountain of life." "Fountain" is defined in part as a source; but a fountain seen in park or garden is also typical of controlled action. Thus we see that divine law controls all activity aright because it is the law of universal Love.

We find the authority for this in the true account of creation, in the first chapter of Genesis, where it is stated that God saw everything He had made and pronounced it "very good." There is no half measure here. The account proclaims a universe governed by eternal Love, the source of the only real energy. It is undeniable that the assumptions of evil must surely die when God's law of harmony and perfection is clearly seen. Imperfection cannot exist in perfection. Countless mistaken beliefs of the past have died out of human consciousness through the operation of divine energy. Where the law of universal harmony has been applied with vigor and understanding, strongholds of evil have been broken down.
