I have had so many blessings through the healing power of Christian Science that I desire to relate some to them in the hope that they may encourage those who are seeking healing in Christian Science. I first heard of this Science toward the end of the Second World War, when a neighbor gave me some copies of the Christian Science Sentinel to read. These I took into the air raid shelter, where my daughter and I went at night for protection from bombs, and they gave me much comfort and helped me to overcome fear.
After the war I became very sick. An X ray showed that I had stones in my bladder, and I was afraid of everything I ate. By this time I had grown quite interested in Christian Science, and I asked for help from a practitioner. Gradually I realized that man's true food is the inspiration of divine Love. The Christian Science Hymnal helped me greatly, especially Hymn No. 278, one line of which reads, "Healed is thy hardness, His love hath dissolved it."
I soon regained my health and was so uplifted that I desired to show my gratitude for Christian Science, which had so much helped me. One way to do this, I knew, was to join the local Christian Science Society, which was in need of workers. I was smoking heavily at the time, and I knew that I could not be accepted for membership till I had broken this bad habit. It was not easy to do so, but a Christian Science friend helped me with this problem. I would start to smoke a cigarette and then put it out, but I could not overcome the desire to smoke. Finally I prayed, "Father, please take the desire from me." The desire went, and I was free. I enjoyed years of happy activity in the Christian Science Society.
