When I was a child, Christian Science was presented to my mother by a dear friend. I learned very little about it, because the study of it was forbidden in my home; but when I had the opportunity, I used to attend a Christian Science Sunday School.
One day my mother was taken seriously ill with paralysis. When she was about to pass on, I went into another room and repeated several times "the scientific statement of being" from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 468), which I had learned in Sunday School. Then I went into the room where my mother was and told her to rise and walk. She did so and thereafter was perfectly well. Many times I have looked back on this experience as a proof of Mrs. Eddy's statement that "a grain of Christian Science does wonders for mortals, so omnipotent is Truth." The complete quotation is as follows (ibid., p. 449): "A grain of Christian Science does wonders for mortals, so omnipotent is Truth, but more of Christian Science must be gained in order to continue in well doing."
When I left home I began to study Christian Science, and then I learned that it is indeed the promised Comforter, the revelation of Truth to this age. Gradually, through my study, the scars of an unhappy childhood were erased from my mind. Also, a painful physical disorder was healed completely through my own study of Mrs. Eddy's writings. Heretofore the condition had defied the doctors' skill, and nothing could be done to relieve my suffering.
