WHICH MIRROR?

From the September 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A Biblical text frequently quoted by students of Christian Science is from the first chapter of Genesis. As a glorious culmination of an ascending record of spiritual creation the text states (verse 27), "God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him." Christian Science is revealing the redeeming, strength-giving, and healing implication of this basic statement of Christianity by unfolding a clearer concept of God and therefore of His image, man. This record sets forth the essential scientific unity of God and man as origin and image, Mind and idea, source and reflection.

An image is an exact representation. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 23): "Few there are who comprehend what Christian Science means by the word reflection. God is seen only in that which reflects good, Life, Truth, Love—yea, which manifests all His attributes and power, even as the human likeness thrown upon the mirror repeats precisely the looks and actions of the object in front of it." And on page 515 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy says, "All that God imparts moves in accord with Him, reflecting goodness and power."

Inasmuch as Christian Science declares that God is Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love, the mirror of Science shows man as reflecting or expressing the qualities which these terms imply. For instance, it shows that man, who is entirely spiritual, has no movement of his own, but reflects the omniactivity of Mind; that he has no substance of his own, but reflects the divine substance, or understanding, of Spirit; that he has no personality of his own, but reflects the identity of Soul.
