INSPIRED CHURCH MEMBERSHIP

From the October 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In a letter to The Christian Science Board of Directors, Mary Baker Eddy writes (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 143), "Watch and pray that God directs your meetings and your lives, and your Leader will then be sure that they are blessed in their results." When the activities of branch Churches of Christ, Scientist, are conducted by members who follow this advice of our Leader, the inevitable result is great progress for the church and also for the individual.

The book of Acts in the New Testament relates the experiences of the early Christian church and its members after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus. Before his ascension the Master had said to his faithful followers (1:8), "Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."

How true was the Master's statement! For on the Day of Pentecost, when the apostles were all gathered together in Christian unity, they were baptized with the inspiration of the Christ and spoke with the new tongue of Spirit. And, in the pages of the New Testament, their mighty works evidence for us the power of the Christ as the healing, saving, and regenerating agent for mankind.
