TEACHING THE CHILDREN

From the October 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One of the rewarding privileges that come to a member of a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, is the opportunity to teach in the Sunday School. This experience holds a blessing for teacher and pupil when it is approached as another opportunity to demonstrate Christian Science.

Whenever an earnest student of this Science accepts with humility and enthusiasm the appointment as a Sunday School teacher, he will be given the wisdom to perform the work. Previous experience through professional teaching or through parenthood is not a prerequisite. Willingness to learn is most desirable. The Bible and the writings of our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, abound in helpful messages for the teacher.

What are some qualities which are to be emphasized in teaching children? Love, morality, meekness, and loyalty are among them, and fruitage is the result. Above all, love is the incentive and attraction of good teaching, the basis of discipline, and the source of inspiration. Why morality? Because young people often learn more from an example of impersonal high ideals than from direct instruction on the subject.
