THE ALLNESS OF MIND

From the October 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Over eighty years ago Mary Baker Eddy declared the allness of divine Mind and the nothingness of matter. She arrived at this conclusion from the facts that God, Spirit, is All and that His allness excludes the presence of anything unlike Himself. She further proved that matter and mortal mind are one and the same thing, a lie—a lie about God and His universe.

It is important to note that our Leader based her demonstrations of Christian Science not only upon the understanding of the nothingness of matter but upon the understanding of the allness of divine Mind. She emphatically states in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 256, 257): "Infinite Mind is the creator, and creation is the infinite image or idea emanating from this Mind. If Mind is within and without all things, then all is Mind; and this definition is scientific." Thus we see that creation—man and the universe—is not material but is completely spiritual.

The understanding of spiritual existence appears transcendental only to the physical senses. Since these material senses, even from a human standpoint, do not give consistent or reliable testimony, are we to believe their claims regarding our being? If we do, we are breaking the First Commandment (Ex. 20:3), "Thou shalt have no other gods before me"; for the senses declare that matter, not God, is the creator and that matter has power.
