THE PERFECT WORK OF PATIENCE

[Original in German]

From the April 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A Christian Scientist perceived that patience is an important factor in the establishment of the kingdom of heaven within us. Therefore she searched zealously to find the true concept of patience and quickly perceived that Christian Science admits only a positive standpoint regarding it. Through the study of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, she saw that true patience is the joyous, steadfast acknowledgment of the presence of God, good.

"My brethren," wrote the Apostle James (1:2-4), "count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing." How clearly James saw the joy we may have even before the "divers temptations" are fully overcome and perfection is demonstrated. Joyful patience is a strong factor in the healing work of Christian Science.

Christ Jesus illustrated this truth in his declaration before Lazarus rose from the grave (John 11:41), "Father, I thank thee." Also every demonstration of Christian Science in our day is based on this same glorious consciousness and acknowledgment of that which will become apparent.
