TWO ASPECTS OF THE CHRIST

From the April 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

No figure in the whole of history has stirred people's thought so radically and in such different ways as that of Christ Jesus.

We remember the transformation of the Magdalen and also of Zacchaeus, the publican, when their hearts were touched by the penetrating, building-up, sin-destroying power of the Christ, as expressed by Jesus. We recall the impetuous devotion of the rugged Peter to his Master and the steadfast love of John. And, on the other hand, we hear the mob responding to their priests' and rulers' insensate hatred for Christ Jesus with cries of, "Crucify him, crucify him" (Luke 23:21).

Mary Baker Eddy writes in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 332): "Christ is the true idea voicing good, the divine message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness." This "divine message from God to men" is twofold in its import. Of the coming of Immanuel, Isaiah writes (7: 15), "Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good."
