LIGHT GIVERS

From the January 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

As far back as the Scriptures record, men and women have sought spiritual light, and in proportion as human thought has been receptive, an enlightened concept of God and of His spiritual creation has unfolded to mankind. Spiritual light—divine intelligence—awakening mankind pushes on the ages to the investigation and comprehension of fundamental facts and inspires the world to seek ever-increasing spiritual development and power.

Just as there have always been divine impartations of spiritual light, so there have always been transparencies—light givers— through which this light has shined. Paul recognized the need for light givers when he wrote (Phil. 2:14, 15), "Do all things without murmurings and disputings: that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world." The original word here translated "lights" has the meaning of "light givers." Through the centuries the need of light givers has always existed.

Jesus, who expressed the Christ in all its love, power, and pureness, is unsurpassed in the light which he gave to the world. Speaking of his true selfhood, the Christ, he said (John 8:12), "I am the light of the world." The Christ, the divine idea of God, which Jesus manifested, is light supreme to human consciousness.
